REQUIREMENTS
To Be Eligible You Must:
1. Be 65 years old (or older)
during the application period, or be 100% totally and permanently disabled, and show proof of that
disability.
2. Own and occupy your home or
manufactured home as of January 1 of the year.
Applications must be filed between
the first of January and the first Monday in June.

Concerning Homestead Exemption
Q. If I am filing for the Homestead
Exemption this year, which property tax bill does it affect?
A. If you are filing for the first
time, the reduction will be reflected on the tax bills you will receive the
next year.
Q. May I keep my Homestead
Exemption if I transfer my home to my children?
A. Contact your attorney to learn
about Life Estates and Inter Vivos Trusts.
Q. I plan to sell my house and buy
a smaller one. How do I keep my Homestead Exemption?
A. Since the Homestead Exemption is
not transferable, please come to the Athens County Auditor's office and fill
out a new application for your new home after you have lived in it through
January 1 of the new year.
